Lauri – Towards the New World
We are living the fall of 2009. Lauri, the singer of The Rasmus has just landed in Singapore to visit the band's guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi. The two guys are going to write new material for the new Rasmus album. But something is wrong in a good way. Songs that are born in the Singapore studio are way different; more electronic and dancy. They even have techno influences and don't sound anything like the pop/rock tunes that launched The Rasmus to their huge success and millions of sold albums.
– We started to arrange guitar bits on the demos, but it just didn't seem right. All the time I felt that this music should have a chance to grow to a new direction, no matter if it fits The Rasmus after all, says Lauri.
– When I got the idea of making a solo album, my vision became clear right away. Fortunately the idea was ok with the rest of the band and suddenly I had all doors open in front of me. I consider my solo carrier as a second chance in music. It's a place where I can go to make all my weirdest dreams reality. New World has swallowed me completely for the past and upcoming moths.
Hands on Everything
– When it comes to work - The Rasmus way of making an album is more precise, patient and slow. My solo record has been made more in a garage band feeling, spontaneously and free. I for example ended up using demo vocals and lyrics in many songs. The album will be released through my own record label Dynasty Helsinki. Now that I have full control I can work with no control, it's fantastic! Besides composing, writing lyrics and producing the album I've also been involved with writing video scripts, designing the album covers, taking photos, building props for the video. I've had my hands on pretty much everything. I've missed this way of being, explains Ylönen.
Lauri's solo album New World is completely different from the material that we've used to hear from The Rasmus. And that's the whole idea.
– On this album you don't hear guitars. Still some of the songs "rock" harder than any other song I've made in the past. The music is very visual; you can find Vangelis' Blade Runner type of moods and many different variations of electronic music styles all mixed up... Altogether the feeling on the album is quite dramatic with the long instrumental parts, still not forgetting the more radio type of pop songs, says Lauri.
Fans of The Rasmus don't need to be worried at all
– We'll start writing new songs with The Rasmus during next summer and we'll go to studio as soon as possible. After all this work with synthesizers I already miss grabbing the guitar and writing a rock song. I have a feeling that this will be a fantastic summer and fall.
In the near future Lauri will also have the opportunity to present the new material live on stage.
– Inspiration for the live set we've got from Kraftwerk, Jarre, Prodigy and so on. Our aim is to offer a great live set weather it's in a very small club or a big festival.
